A remarkable neck-pendant found outside of a paintedcave back in the 1880s. The artifact wasprominently displayed on a mantle until this site acquired it and several otheritems from that initial find.

The green-tinted pendant has several dings and soilabrasion scratches. What is distinguishable, however, is the tiny vertical notch on the inner hole, towards the pointedtop: exactly the type of wear markexpected from a string looped around this section—the bottom of the pendant iswider/heavier.

The Chumash were known to value small, personal items—frompainted stones, to small tube pipes, to colorful neck ornaments. This listed artifact falls into the lattercategory.

As to why it was found in the mystical hill cave areaabove Santa Monica—where painted caves were used by tribal shamans to communewith the spirit world—is anyone’s guess.

A nice, bottom-heavy pendant that “saw” a lot of usearound someone’s neck in ancient times.
