Up for action is really unusual handwritten ledger with entries begging in 1821 than a break and new owner they start up again in 1849 to1863.The ledger contains approx 100 double sided sheets filed with information and originates from Ohio. Written on the cover in bold black letters are the words “ Letter Book and what looks like the name R. Syow, and than the words \"Day Book\" or inventory book and the year 1821. Inside the front cover the names Peter Vandebelt & Joseph Shotwell- “Still House Book” 1821. Apparently Vanderbilt and Shotwell- had a Still House in operation. There are entries listing bushels of Rye and the construction of the house, also pasted inside are several adds three for gold pens, and two articles from newspapers. There is to much to describe in this lager it s full of handwritten entries. It appears the ledger has lived several lives since the first 20 sheets were written in the 1820’s. Those sheets lists individuals and information regarding the Still House. In addition I found an interesting letter and two envelope’s within the sheets of the ledger. The letter was written in 1883 from a gentleman who was writing to his wife a miss J.W. Hunsiken of Woodlyn Ohio. Her husband was apparently traveling West. He was writing form West liberty Iowa.(I transcribed a brief portion of the letter below ) Back to the ledger. In 1849 the ledger seems to have changed hands, and is now used as a copybook or Attorneys or some sort of gentleman in the legal profession, in Cadiz Ohio. This is what makes up the bulk of the ledger. Many sheets filled with Dear Sir. letters mentioning debts and attempts to collect on debts. Other letters mention stocks. Many of the letters are associated with a. R Lyons from Cadiz, OH. The ledger is in poor shape both covers are detached binding is split and the ledger is split in half.Measures: 8\" x 12 3/4\" x 1/2\"A brief excerpt from the letter see photos for more details the letter is more extensive:
West liberty Iowa , 1883
My Dear, I arrived here this eve at 7:30am feeling a little tired & thought I would stop for the night and take my rest and start again in the morning Worthington.
I will be on the road all day. This is a nice county and good land. I have looked across the parries until my eyes are sore
But Chicago is the biggest thing ever seen they saw it is second only to New York.
