(1827-1895)

A career West Point militaryofficer who served through the Civil War, eventually being promoted through theranks to Brigadier General and Chief of United States Army Ordnance.

Benet was a Civil WarEra West Point Professor of Ordnance and Science of Gunnery, Commander of theFrankford Arsenal, and a military Author.He was the father of Civil War Colonel James Walker Benet, and thegrandfather of poets Stephen Vincent Benet and Laura Benet.

Here\'s a RARE TYPED LETTER SIGNEDBY BENET on Attractive “Ordnance Office, War Department. Washington D. C.” -1p. TLS, dated Dec. 29, 1890 to “The Standard Steel Casting Company, Thurlow,Pa.,” informing the company that “…your contract with this Department for 11-inchsteel shell…has been extended to January 15, 1891…” The verso of the lettercontains a couple of signed military endorsements.

BOLDLY Signed by Benet as “Brig. Gen., Chief of Ordnance.”NOTE:The biography pictured in the listing is included with the Autograph.
