Civil War Muster and Pay Roll, Co. E, 4th Regiment, Virginia Volunteer Infantry, Union Army, Dec. 31, 1862 at Brownstown, Va. (present day Marmet, W. Va., in the Kanawa Valley).

The Fourth Regiment, Virginia Volunteer Infantry, Union Army, was organized in the summer of 1861 at Mason City, Mason

County, Va. (after 1863 West Va.). Co. E was recruited at Racine, Pomeroy, and Syracuse, in Meigs County, Ohio, and crossed the

Ohio River as an organized infantry unit to join the new 4th regiment. The 4th Regiment participated prominently in the siege and

capture of Vicksburg in 1863. After suffering heavy losses at Vicksburg and in subsequent campaigns, the 4th was so depleted by

Dec., 1864 that it lost its identity when consolidated with another regiment.

Eleven privates signed the pay roll with an “x” mark, indicating apparently that they could not write their names.
