This lot comprises a 3 page Civil War Soldier’sletter from April 2, 1862. Joseph C.Arnold of Company E. 96th Ohio writes from Memphis to his family athome.

The letter reads, in part:”…There has a good many of our boys has diedbut I have been spared…We have moved up the river 18 miles and there is talkthat we will go up to Kentucky again…Then they will fill up the regiment withContrabands…This is a hard war that we have got into and we must fight itthrough…I wish that this fuss in the North was settled. Then I think the Warwould close, but as long as the North is split this war will last. They hadbetter make peace at home then go south to fight…”. Some of the phonetic spellinghas been corrected and there is some staining of the letter as the scans show, but the letter is still quite readable.

The 96th Ohio saw more that it\'s fair share of action. It was heavily engaged at Arkansas Post, Arkansas just over a month after this letter was written. It would also see action at Vicksburg and at several places in Louisiana.

This letter is somewhat stained, but is still quite readable as you can see above.

Good Luck and Happy offerding !
