Samuel Swinfiin Burdett, a Dewitt Iowa Volunteer, served 3 years with the 1st Iowa Cavalry, rising from the ranks to Assistant Provost Marshal at St Louis, Missouri in 1864, settling in Osceola, Missouri in 1865. Postwar Captain Burdett served as Grand Army of the Republic Commander in Chief, and is interred in Arlington National Cemetery.
