Up for sale is this VERY RAREORIGINAL[NOT a repro/reprint]1860\'s Albumen Stereoview by John P Soulefrom the \"Scenes of the Great Rebellion\" series andtitled No. 339 ~ Interior of Fort Sumpter [sic], looking toward Charleston, S.C. [sic Charleston, from April of 1865].NOTE: This is a VERY RARE & HISTORIC Image, since it ALSO shows Sam A. Cooley, Official Photographer 10th US Army, photographing a Union? Soldier on the fort parapet in the distance. This would make an OUTSTANDING addition to ANY stereoview, Photographer, or Civil War collection.
PS:If ANYONE can shed any more light on who took this image, PLEASE contact me.
This is a VERY RARE Stereoview Image of a Photographer taking another photographer\'s photo, at a famous Civil War landmark no less!!! Background shows Sam A Cooley, under the hood of his box camera, photographing a soldier on the parapet of Fort Sumter. You can clearly see the tripod legs of the camera with the photographer hunched over under the camera hood taking the photograph. The small size of the men shows just how large and high the parapet was back than, in fact you can see stairs going up it and a hole / tunnel going through it. Mid-ground shows a raised primitive walkway [must have been muddy] with bits of lumber & who knows what else lying on the ground. Foreground shows a brick chimney [the soldiers lived underground for protection from bombardments]. The Gabion baskets in the background are obviously the same as the empty dark woven baskets in foreground that would have been filled with dirt and used for cover/protection, like sandbags are used in wars today.Front left edge says: Scenes of the Great Rebellion. ~ Entered According to Act of Congress, in the year 1865, by John P. Soule, in the clerk\'s office of the District Court for the District of Massachusetts. Front right edge says: Charleston, S.C. and Forts in Vicinity ~ Photographed in March and April, 1865. Backsays in pencil: Sam Cooley Photographs a Solider, Ruins of Ft. Sumpter, April, 1865. and has a Ed. Burchard Collection stamp. Back also has the regular printed info: Soule\'s Stereoscopic Views of ~ White Mountains and Vicinity, N.H. ~ Niagara Falls and Vicinity ~ Hudson River and West Point ~ Washington, New York and Boston. ~ Harper\'s Ferry, Va. ~ Scenes of the Great Rebellion. ~ Statuary, &c., &c. ~ Published by John P. Soule, 199 Washington Street, Boston.
