During the Civil War suttlers would peddle their goods to the soldiers in their campsites and many items they sold would have to be weighed like sugar, grains, etc.

This crude blacksmith made balance beam has two scales in one depending on what hook you used with the counter-weight. One graduation was for items weighing between 1-10 pounds and the other hanging hook was used for weighing items from 15-50 pounds and the counter weight is crudely cast.

This early scale (1840\'s-1860\'s era) was found in Pennsylvania and is also hand stamped on cross bar with the makers name \"H? M. FOSTER\" and also it is stamped \"SEAL\".

A nice example that the suttler used on his early dealings with not only soldiers in the Civil War but with towns people when he traveled the countryside selling his goods and wares (it weighs 2 pounds 4 oz. and is complete working condition).
