From the Foreword: \"It is both a great honor and a pleasure for me to write this introduction because I share with Dorothy Burr Thompson a love for the terracotta figurine, be it from the Aegean of the western Mediterranean, or form the Archaic, Classical, Hellenistic, or Roman periods. In the books and articles that are the landmarks of her life as an archaeologist, Mrs. Thompson has been able to bring together two approaches to the study of terracottas that have sometimes been opposed: the approach that makes use of the analysis of material from excavations, and the approach that consider museum collections. In fact, her first important publication was of a collection of figurines from Myrina in the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. The study that she made of the various types of figurines in this collection, including those representing Aphrodite, Eros, Victories, and draped female figures, served as the basis for all works since published on the terracotta production of this site in Asia Minor. At the same time, however, working on the terracottas brought to light during the excavations in the Athenian Agora by the American School of Classical Studies at Athens, she was able to utilize material from controlled excavations, scientifically examining them in a series of articles published in Hesperia from 1952 to 1966. Here she was able to trace the development of Attic workshops in the Hellenistic period. Her reflections and the conclusions that she drew from a meticulous analysis of the material have been able to orient research definitively on a body of material -- figurines and reliefs made of clay -- that sometimes was viewed in too philosophical a light, and at other times was disdained as a source of information for the history for art and
