REAL PHOTO POSTCARDGerman Ocean Liner KRONPRINZ WILHELM Ca. 1916

~ITEM DESCRIPTION~1920s -RPPC/real photo postcard- German Ocean Liner KRONPRINZ WILHELM. One of the largest and fastest passenger ships in the world during pre-WWI times, setting a cross-Atlantic speed record of 26 mph in 1902, a year after she was launched.

There is a faint caption on the photo, which has several errors, including the name of the ship (they spelled it \"Wilhem\"). I had to enhance it on the photo to make it readable.

In 1914 the German military seized the Wilhelm and turned the ship into sort of a \"pirate\" ship, though she was called an \"Auxiliary Cruiser\". She managed to avoid all British warships. Any non-German ship she captured was seized, and its passengers, luggage and cargo politely transferred to the Wilhelm. The captured ship was transferred into German hands or scuttled. If of no naval use it was generally let go. No lives were lost in the many captures made by the Wilhelm. Then she got low on coal, and frantically traveled from port to port in South America looking for fuel, and finding little, wound up in Newport News, USA, where she \"gave up\". Her crew and passengers, 1000 of them, were put into sort of an easy going internment camp. When the USA entered WWI, we renamed the ship the Von Steuben and used her to haul many US troops back and forth from Europe during the remainder of the war. After 1919, she was retired, and was scrapped in 1923. This postcard seems to date to just before she surrendered to America.
