Scarce gold gilt medal made for the Society of California Pioneer members. The original medal, seen in the last three photos, was made in 1849. It was a solid gold commemorative piece inscribed and presented to \"Michael Baldwin\". Exact, gold gilded, reproductions were made (probably using the same exact die stamp as the original) in the 1870\'s for members who arrived in California before Jan. 1st 1850. They were also given to family members of the pioneers.These medals are very rare and this particular one is in excellent condition with no wear. It has raised, high relief, gold rush scenes with attached California grizzly bear above \"CALIFORNIA / PIONEER / 1849\" with pin on reverse.
Nice size: 3 inches long overall. Round medallion is 1-3/4 inches. Made by \"Eugene H. Richards / Boston\"
