Ceramic New York Subway Transit Tile - Grand Central Station (IRT 456 July 17, 1918)New York City Subway stations are decorated with ceramic tile mosaics, identifying the station’s location. Images of these colorful mosaics and plaques of the underground transit stations are chemically embedded into high-glaze ceramic tiles, faithfully reproduced, with the look and feel of the original underground ceramics. This mosaic motif of a 19th century bellstacked steam engine with cow catcher was designed by Jay Van Everen in 1918 for the new Grand Central subway station located at 42nd St. and Lexington Ave. True colors are locked into the tile substrate. The historic piece comes with mounting hardware on the reverse. (Measures 6-inches square)Beautifully-designed panels, nameplates and plaques have graced the city\'s subway stations since 1904. These wonderful works of public art have been faithfully reproduced, with the look and feel of the original underground ceramics. When the first passengers began riding the New York City subway system in 1904, they found beautifully designed stations decorated with magnificent ceramic mosaics and detailed plaques. Architects George C. Heins and Christopher LaFarge, heavily influenced by the Arts and Crafts movement, used the icons to help riders - especially non-English speaking immigrants - identify station stops. As the subway system expanded into the boroughs in 1918 and 1919, the architect Squire J. Vickers produced the Art Deco-ish station panels. Examples of his work can be seen today at stations such as Clark Street, Borough Hall and even Grand Central Station.
