This piece is part of a wonderfulantique clothing collection belonging to the late Mary Ireland. You can readabout her at www.poppiescottage.com in the Blog.

I have a Lace Mentor who has been collecting and researching lace for over 30 years. I will always tell you if the lace I sell has been shown to her. I am so grateful for her expertise.

As usual, Mrs Ireland meticulously labelled this gorgeous cap, and it was presented to her from a named lady from Rhodesia [now Zimbabwe].

Mrs Ireland was born in the late Victorian years and by the 1920\'s she was quite a society lady with upper class friends, so I presume that \'presented\' means given or donated!

The label also says that the cap is Dutch, and has a dating of 1820-40.

Although Mrs Ireland could well have had more details of this particular piece, these dates seemed a little odd to me, based on the tambouring design, especially to the cap back, which is decorated with delightful single flowers of different shapes and styles. The shape of the cap is not helpful in this case, because caps such as these were worn traditionally in many countries, all through from the 18th Century to the 20th Century, so it is the lace design that gives us the best clues.

I turned to the Lace Mentor. She agreed that the design of the tambouring looked a little later, so we agreed to give an approximate dating up to the 1850\'s.

Having said all of this for accuracy, this cap is just adorable! Please note that I placed pink tissue in the crown, so you can see the detail, but the actual piece is all cream in colour.

The first thing is the lovely front band that curves deeply towards below the ears at each side. Beautiful decoration, which does indeed, appear quite early.

The crown is raised at the top to rise higher than the front band, and here we find those delightful flower sprigs, quite large but plenty of them!

The cap is in excellent antique condition. There are slight storage marks but it would be very easy to rinse it in cold water for an hour or two. Then it will be as fresh as a daisy!

All original, including the back ties.

Love it!
