This is a most delightful early to mid 18th century Georgian portrait miniature, dating to c. 1720 - 1750 A.D. The portrait attributed to a follower of Andrew Benjamin Lens (seehere), the long neck and nose painted very similar to his work by Lens though it is unsigned. The sitter being unknown but a very elegant young lady, with a secretive smile. In her hair she wears a white Alba Rose, symbol of the Jacobites. She has no other jewellery, so your eye is drawn to this floral spray in her hair. The red dress also appears to resemble some type of tartan, or embroidered decoration very simple yet full of messages. The miniature is very skillfully painted on a natural wafer, the more you look the better it gets! It is set into a gilt metal (ormolu) slide, once worn as a bracelet with pearls, later the clasp was lost and it was fitted into a turned and ebonized, boxwood frame. Today you can either house it in the frame or wear it as a pendant - or have the clasp repaired and once again a bracelet. It is a very nice item in original antique condition. Worthy I believe of a little TLC and some further research! The condition is as found, the spots on the image are dust on the inside of the glazed bezel, this has not been opened in hundreds of years.
