Up for sale is another piece obtained recently from a purchased collection of Utah minerals! This sample contains a great exposure of silvery chlorargyrite (AgCl) as well as a great coverage of spongy brown bromian chlorargyrite across the face of the piece. An amazing specimen from a lesser well-known locale in the famous Tintic Mining District! This piece measures approximately 11.1 cm by 7.1 cm and is shows the incredible minerals that made the Tintic District the leading district in Utah for years.
The Gold Chain Mine was originally known as the \"Copperopolis and the American Eagle\" mine, and produced over $1,000,000 in ore (as measured in 1914 dollars) prior to 1890. The mine shipped large amounts of copper ore up until 1907, when 8,000 tons of low-grade ore were shipped as part of the clean-up operations. In 1909, the Ajax, Cleveland, Pedro, and Gold Chain mines were consolidated under the name \"Gold Chain Mines\" and the shaft was deepened to 1,100 feet. This revealed an ore body rich in gold and some silver which was mined from 1913 to 1914. The mine ceased operations in 1914 after no new ore bodies were discovered. The gross value of the Gold Chain operations since 1899 likely exceeds $3,000,000 (again, measured in 1914 dollars). In general, the ore yielded 0.6 ounces of gold and 2 to 18 ounces of silver per ton, 2 to 8 percent copper, and less than 1 percent lead. Also present was a whole lotta arsenic.
