Offeredfor your consideration is one of the finest thuribles ever made, the KoleyModel 101. The Koley 1o1 is unique for several reasons. The most obvious is theexclusive simple single chain mechanism, eliminating the frustration andembarrassment of tangled chains during the Liturgy. The United States PatentOffice issued a patent for this thurible on October 7, 1941, two months to theday before the Japanese attack at Pearl Harbor. Not only is the single chain designunique, the thurible is also made from solid brass and copper. The traditionalByzantine design features an inner bowl made of copper with an insulator which separatesit from the base, a type of double wall construction, which helps lower thetemperature of the outer bowl and base. Within the inner bowl is a smallercopper bowl in which the lighted coal is placed. As the photographs indicate,the thurible is very clean with only minimal incense residue. It stands 9 ½ inchestall, is 4 3/8 inches in diameter with a base of 3 ½ inches which insures itsstability. The base contains a brass counterweight which forces the thurible toswing in a straight line, therefore minimizing the chance of spillage. Thechain is 30 ½ inches long, with a total length from the suspension ring to thebase of 40 inches. There have been many attempts to copy this fine thurible, none have featured the same high quality design and materials.The market is now flooded with cheap Indian and Chinese copies yet they pale bycomparison to this uniquely American design which features European stylingcombined with American ingenuity.
