About this Item:

Quarter-Plate Tintype (1855 - 1865), 19th century portrait of soldiers, vintage Union Case, 3.25 x 4.25. A tintype photograph was created by utilizinga sheet of iron coated with enamel or a dark lacquer. Through this application, adirect positive could be made, supporting the process of photographic emulsion. Much like their predecessors, tintypes were initially made in photography studios, but quickly became mobile; it wasn't uncommon to see photographers in booths, open air markets at carnivals and fairs creating these images on the spot. This was made possible because the lacquered iron sheet did not require drying, making it possible to develop and deliver a finished image minutes after it was taken.

Featured within one half of thisvintage Union Case is a rare outdoor full-length portrait of a mounted enlisted Federal Calvaryman. The soldier is clad in a shell jacket,kepi and boots with flaps that extendabove his knees. The saddle bags are visible in the McClellan saddle. The image is bordered by an embellished gold frame, and although the front cover is missing, the verso of the back panel is fantastically-preserved, bearing an intricate vine-work design.

In very good condition, withsurface marks and some mild rippling to the image, amissing front cover andmoderate wear to the back panel.
