Call Photographer, 895 Elm Street, opposite city hall, Manchester, N.H. and on the back of the general\'s card, Williams & Anderson traveling photographers, Pictures enlarged, etc. etc.  The one of Lincoln looks to have a beveled thin gold colored border around the edge. Schuyler Hamilton, grandson of Alexander Hamilton, was born in New York City on July 25, 1822. He entered the US Military Academy at West Point at the age of 15 years and was graduated in 1841, ranking 4th in a class of 52. Hamilton was critically wounded twice during the Mexican-American War. He then served as aide-de-camp to General Winfield Scott for seven years. He resigned from the Army in 1855. At the outbreak of the Civil war, Hamilton volunteered as Private with the 7th New York State Militia. However, General Scott soon appointed him military secretary with a staff rank of Colonel. Upon Scott’s retirement, Hamilton joined his brother-in-law, General Henry Halleck in St. Louis as assistant chief of staff of the Department of the Missouri. He was commissioned Brigadier General with rank from November 12, 1861. He commanded a Division under General John Pope in operations against New Madrid and Island No. 10. He participated in the advance upon Corinth under Halleck. Hamilton commanded the left wing but fell ill of malaria and went on sick leave. He was appointed Major General (the uniform he is wearing in the CDV) with rank from September 17, 1862. However, he resigned from the Army on February 27, 1863 due to disability before the Senate ever confirmed his promotion. So, we know this photo was taken sometime between September 17, 1862 and February 27, 1863. He died on March 8, 1903 (aged 75 years) and is buried at Greenwood Cemetery, Brooklyn, NY.
