$150.00

Up for sale is a rare authentic Civil War era pocket diary.Title page reads \"Daily Pocket diary for the year 1863: For the purpose of registering event of Past, Present, and Future Occurrence\". It was published by Kiggins & Kellogg of 123 and 125 William Street in New York, 1863.It belonged to a young man named Hiram Webster Vale from Columbiana County , Ohio. It does not appear that Mr. Vale was a soldier, but he does reference friends in the war. There are also lists of battles and generals as well as references to school and marriages. There are notes of the prices of things at the time, money owed to Mr. Vale by others for goods and labor, doodles, and other interesting entries. There are also preprinted pages at the front that show presidents (only goes through Lincoln as of 1863), 1850 and 1860 census results for major cities of the time, 1860 populations for states that existed (broken down by free men and slaves), and various other tables of interesting facts. Most writing is in pencil, and some can be very hard to read. Entries cover 1863-1866, but are in somewhat random order. This is truly a very cool piece of history!offer with confidence as I offer a 14 day return policy.
