Civil War Era N.C.O. Military Society Fraternal Militia Sword Eagle Pommel:
$275.00

American N.C.O. military / society / fraternalsword circa 1840 - 1860. Scabbard drag molded with a star andcrossed banner as the m.1860 staff sword. This sword is a representative example of a very common Militia NCO or Sergeant\'s Sword with the exception that this is a lesser seen eagle pommel. Frequently, the Knight\'s Head pommel is widely shown in displays. However, there are many variations.
The State Militias were the initial source for most of the early combatants in the Civil War. Many of these swords were likely carried to war at that time, as they were relatively inexpensive and their lack of \"combat worthiness\" was yet to be known. I have owned several and enjoyed collecting them throughout the years.
This one shows the Eagle pommel with \"fluted\" bone grip. Most are unmarked but this one is clearly marked under thecross guard . However, my eyes cannot read the maker and have long forgotten what\'s on there. The nickel platedscabbard is marked with a number 14. Spear point blade not rounded like many seen. Nice collectible. FreeShipping.
Fraternal organizations and secret societies were very common in the United States between 1850 - 1930. There were millions of members of these groups which account for the sheer volume of swords produced. Fraternal swords were also common place as officer\'s swords. \"It\'s the tradition and symbolism of the sword and the honor of carrying one that was reflected.\" Because these swords were not battle worthy they however, embodied living by a \"code of honor.\" These types of swords are perfect for the beginning collector on a budget or the more experienced collector that appreciates the symbolism they embellished in a time vastly different from today.
