Vintage stereoview photo titled, \"Bridal Party at General Butler\'s, Lowell, Mass.,July 21, 1870.\" This was the marriage of Adelbert Ames and Blanche Butler, daughter of Civil War Union General Benjamin Butler. They are pictured at the center of the image. The groomsmen were Colonel W. E. (William Emery) Merrill (1837 - 1891, graduated from West Point in 1859 and as an Asst. Professor of Engineering there from Sep. 11, 1860, to July 8, 1861), Major A. R. (Adelbert Rinaldo) Huffington (1837 - 1922, graduated from West Point in May 1861 - the same class as Adelbert Ames), General C. (Charles) A. Carleton (a volunteer officer who had enlisted in a New York militia unit in 1861. He became an officer and then served as Ames\'s Adjutant), and Major William Atwood. The bridesmaids were Miss Minnie Chandler, daughter of Senator Chandler of Michigan, Miss Hildreth, Miss Fannie Talbot of Lowell, and Miss Maria Nesmith also from Lowell.

Adelbert Ames (1835 - 1933) was a West Point graduate, sailor, soldier, and politician who served with distinction as a Union Army general during the Civil War. As a Radical Republican, he was military governor, U.S. Senator, and civilian governor in Reconstruction-era Mississippi. In 1898, he served as a United States Army general during the Spanish–American War. Ames was the second to last general officer of the Civil War to die. He succumbed at the age of ninety-seven in 1933. He was outlived in this respect only by Aaron Daggett, who died in 1938 at the age of one hundred. However, because Daggett was a brigadier general by brevet rank only, Ames was the last full-ranked Civil War general to die.

Photographer is Simon Towle out of Lowell, Massachusetts.
