Charles P. Stone, Civil War General noted for his involvement at the battle of Ball\'s Bluff, career military man he was highly decorated during the Mexican American War, excellent content, rareAutograph Letter Signed, 4 pages with original mailing envelope, 8 in. x 6.25 in., 24 November 1847, from Mexico City, Mexico Lieutenant Stone writes to his sister in Greenfield, Massachusetts providing a wonderful description of the Basilica of Our Lady of Gaudalupe, mentions the arrival of General Patterson and also the \"Leonidas\" and \"Veritas\" letters written by General Gideon Pillow which attacked the generalship of General Winfield Scott, in full:
\"The mail has at length come, and brought me nine letters from home, the earliest dated in June, the latest on Aug. 19th. They say General Patterson is on the road with 6,000 men, and what we care much more for, a large and late mail. But we begin to doubt whether there be any such as the Great Philadelphian (Patterson) for since October came in we have heard constantly of his coming. His coming is like Christmas and if he gets up by Christmas we shall be agreeably disappointed.Today I have visited the famous Gaudalupe -with its chapel, church and miraculous spring. The hill to which Cortes retired after the \'noche triste\' is some 3 1/2 miles from the city of Mexico, due north. The chapel of \'our lady of remedies\' is on the crest of a low but steep and rocky hill and it is plain and very small, but is a sacred place to the Mexicans. At the foot of the hill (from which by the way there is a splendid view of the valley of Mexico) is the church which at immense cost has been made the most beautiful in this country. You recollect the story of its foundation as given by Prescott: This story is illustrated in fair paintings on the walls, which are of a chaste white ornamented with gilding. There is little of the gaudiness of which so much is seen in most of the fine churches of this country. The main altar has \'the original serape\' over it, six candles, constantly burning before it the raised platform is ornamented in front by the most beautiful marbles to be found in the country, and is surrounded by a heavy railing, some (?) inches high I should think, of pure silver. One thing however produces a most unpleasant feeling. While the service is being performed, a priest stands behind a small table, selling trinketswhich the curious visitor is sure to purchase. The wonderful spring is at the foot of the hill and surrounded by a handsome wall and dome. The column of water appears to be about six inches in diameter, is of a brick red color and strongly charged with iron. The taste to me is delicious, being slightly acid. In the chapel on the hill I purchased the enclosed ribbon, on which is marked the \'measure of the most holy hands of our Lady of Gaudalupe.\"In the chapel on the hill I purchased the enclosed \'Cantico.\' In the ground church, during service I purchased a likeness of \'Nuestra Senora.\'Have you seen the \'Leonidas\' and \'Veritas\' letters? They are now said to have been written by General Pillow!Good night, much love to all, Your affect. brother Charles.\"In fine condition.
