Horace Porter [1837 1921] was an American soldier and diplomat who served as a lieutenant colonel, ordnance officer and staff officer in the Union Army during the American Civil War. Porter was awarded the Medal of Honor for his actionat the Battle of Chickamauga during the Civil War.During the war he also served as the personal secretary to GeneralUlysses S. Grant and William T. Sherman and in 1866, he was appointed to the brevet grade ofbrigadier general.After the war he was appointed as the Ambassador to France and served as the Vice President of the Pullman Palace CarCompany.
