CIVIL WAR LETTER - 11th RHODE ISLAND INFANTRY - EDWIN PERRY:
$42.00

A 4-page ink letter written over the course of two daysfrom Edwin Perry, Company C, 11th Rhode Island Infantry

\"Hospital at Miner\'s Hill, Jan 23/63. Dear brother....I have thought a number of times that I would write you about the contrabands which are cutting wood near here for the government contractors. The government made a contract with a company to furnish them wood for the regiments around Washington at the rate of four dollars per cord delivered. They at oncecommenced to hire Negroes (or \"contrabands\" as we call them here) to cut the wood similar to our market wood at home at $1.00 per cord. They have now seven hundred men to work for them in different places, about seventy five within a half mile of this place. The contrabands live in booths made of pine boughs in parties of three to five each, eating two meals per day consisting of bacon and bread. They cut on an average 1 1/2 cords per day which is not bad considering they are \"contrabands\". A number of them have run away since the first of January on \"Uncle Abe\'s \" Proclamation.

Saturday Jan 24/63....our new Col....He is a young man not over thirty years old and I thought rather tender looking for a soldier but will probably suit the boys better than Lieut Col Pitman....There is an ambrotype saloon near the Mass. camps where I can get a picture taken....I think you have never written me what folks North think of the war at the present time. Ifa person could judge anything from the Providence Post which is sent here occasionally, he would say things had changed since I left home. No more this time from your affectionate brother, Edwin Perry\"

Letter in excellent condition and easily read. Ships folded as found.
