Civil War letter by Frank Ashley of the 64th Ohio Infantry, Co. H. Ashley writes to his \'\'Love\'\' from Murfreesboro on 13 June 1863, before the regiment was engaged at Chickamauga, and amusing themselves with hanging spies: \'\'...The weather is very warm, all quiet here expect a spy hung once and a while. There is 2 or 3 to be hung now. Do not know when it will be done. It was reported to be done yesterday but it prooved a faslies. There was a large concourse of soldiers to view...but were all fooled at last. There was one hung one week ago and there were 2 hung at Franklin a few days ago...you wrote in your letter about going to California in a short time if you could get the concent of the folks at home and another one that is not at home that one will not give his concent, but if you will go and must go, I suppose that I cannot hinder you...I do not think you intend to desert me and go there...\'\' 3pp. letter is in very good condition.
