Civil War Letter Soldier Killed Rebels White House Vignette This is a wonderful partial letter handwritten by a Civil War soldier.It has a really nice vignette of the White House at the top with good content it says,The weeds was purty high we could of shot three of them but it was about 400 yards to the woods and they could of taken us before we got to the woods so we did not shoot but they seen us three or four of them would of got killed fer it was moon light and we all had revolvers and we kept aim on three of them with our rifles for fear they would see us when they went away…some of the fire zouaves been down to see me this morning…there is about 10000 in sight of our camp in the evening we can hear about 20 bands of music the other night about 12 o’clock.I was standing before my tent there was a band commenced to play Dixie it was a mighty nice clear moonlight night, thought it was the nicest thing I ever heard.We have the best bands in the world it makes anyone feel like fighting to hear the 79thNew York Highland…The best band I ever heard the Wisconsin Silver Band…is playing the Star Spangled Banner…The report is this morning that there was about 200 of our pickets killed and taken prisoners but it is all a false alarm…
