Civil War Medal "honorably Discharged - West Virginia" Soldier Named For Sale
For many years I have been dealing coins and medals. This, I think, is one of the best items that I have had the privilege to sell.
Here is an authentic Civil War medal, from the state of West Virginia. (As you know, West Virginia was created by the Civil War; it was carved from the western counties of Virginia that were sympathetic to the North.)
Size: About 2 1/2" by 1 1/2"
The obverse: The Top Bar reads"HONORABLY DISCHARGED" with a interlocking "WV"; the medal shows the State Seal of West Virginia and the dates 1861 1865.
The reverse: The medal reads "PRESENTED BUY THE STATE OF WEST VIRGINIA". There is rim engraving identifying the Civil War soldier. It reads "GUSTAVAS A. DOWLER BAT Y D 1st REG Lt ARTLY VOL" (I think that means "Gustavus A. Dowler, BatteryCompany D First Regular Light Artillery Volunteer.")
Condition: Spectacular! Almost new, flawless. (The ribbon is is a listing in the website "Find a Grave" for Gustavus Dowler. Here is his tombstone from"Find a Grave". Look it up! Here is what it says about him:
