Original cdv of native Mohawk indian George Squires, Company F 1st U.S. Sharpshooters (Berdan\'s). Clipped/trimmed duplicate of two identical photographs, one of which from my collection is pictured above with the watermarks, the second in private hands and signed/partially hand tinted with gold buttons and green coat/blue vest. Squiers was one of several native Mohawk from Ahkwesáhsne, also known as the St. Regis Reservation, in Franklin County, NY who were drafted in late 1863. Rather than be assigned positions in the infantry, George Squires, Peter Laflin, and David Loran requested to join the U.S. Sharpshooters. All three were mustered in on Dec. 18th, 1863 and joined Co. F (Vermont) 1st USSS at their winter camp shortly thereafter. Squires served until the 1st USSS was disbanded in late 1864, transferring into Co. E 2nd USSS on Dec. 23rd; when that regiment was disbanded in early 1865 Squires then transferred into Co. G 4th Vermont Infantry on February 25th and was mustered out on July 15 after serving continually for nearly nineteen months.Condition is seen above; all edges have been clipped, no major blemishes, ID and service penciled lightly on back. Image exposure is somewhat light but still clear. Like the two duplicates this has no back mark or evidence of a tax stamp meaning it was either taken prior to commencement of the \"Stamp Act\" on Aug. 1st 1864, or could be one in a series of post-war prints. In my opinion the quality of all three identical images points to a war-time creation and not post-war reprint.SHIPPING: I ship quickly and securely upon payment to anywhere in the lower 48 states.
