Civil War soldier letter, Trenton (NJ) August 19, 61, 4 pages to friend Lea, illustrated red/blue lettersheet, soldier holding Flag and waving his sword.staying in Quarkertown then went to Cherryville, visited family. Charlie thinks I have consumption, Charlie has give out going to war, secesh put a stop to that, do not think he enlisted, there are quite a few soldiers encamped here, more coming in every day, cannot walk anywhere without coming in contact with soldiers.
Reeling to and fro (soldier) from the effects of whiskey and lager beer, not safe to go out (ladies) without a gentleman, hear Charity Hawkins is engaged to a returning volunteer, a young man from Burlington, expects to marry in Fall, Will West to marry Miss Jones, handsomest girl in Burlington, now she is sick with small pox, all her parents are worried about is her booty?
Small pox is very bad here, among the lower classes, they live with so many families in one house, enough to breed any kind of disease, there is a family of 10 down with it in one room, they have a large bed of straw on the floor, father and three children have died from it, rest are still very low, they are so covered (with pox) that you cannot put your finger down on any point of their bodies, doctor said it was an awful sight to behold, more content in letter not complete, no date or name but VF and quite good medical related content.
