Civil War soldier letter, Joseph A. Alexander, 125th New York Infantry, Parole Annapolis Camp, POW and died in Andersonville Prison, 2 pages in pencil, went to Harper\'s Ferry to save the army, coming from Martinsburg, ran out of pan into the fire, was shelled out of Harper\'s Ferry, the shells flew faster than I ever want to see them again.
We are taken prisoner on Monday and shelling commenced in Sunday, for 12-15 hours, we had to give up our arms to the secesh, it came hard to us to give up the gray hounds, they are a hard looking set to be called soldiers, we are going this morning to swim in the bay and get some oysters, we are in camp as happy as can be, more content, full ID, Joseph A. Alexander.
Alexander was captured again on December 1, 1863 at mine run, was a POW at Andersonville Prison and died there on June 27, 1864 so he suffered for more than six months. The letter is in very good condition, some light staining or patina, in pencil easy to read. Joseph is not well educated, writes phonetically, but the content is superb and a prisoner of war at Andersonville. Great letter to say the least!
