This lovely Champleve creation is make through a remarkable process -- the bronze metal is heated and stamped to create a pattern with little pockets.
The pockets of bronze are then filled with enamel flakes. It is then heated and the enamel melts to a remarkable richness and depth of colour that is remiscent of stained glass.
Very similar to cloisonne in appearance, due to an outline of shapes and patterns with metal, it is often confused yet this is in a distinct class of it\'s own.
This inkwell is a solid piece, with a glorious Agate stone that is a rich green hued gold, the hinge is in excellent condition, and it sits securely on three little ball feet. (please see photos)
(Agate Stone is similar to marble but is harder and stronger. )
The Agate stone is translucence, with a stunning depth and beauty that is given justice with a satin finish, and is wrapped in bronze metal.
The bronze metal has a warm patina that is highlighted with the crisp, bright multi-colored glowing baked enamel.
Three little rounded feet elegantly hold the agate weighted bronze base, with the distinctly marked on the back with two letters \"I\" and a \"B\" over a number 1190.
This is a similar mark to a high end French designer/ manufacturer who was renowned for the gorgeous Art Nouveau ladies boudoir bronze metal jewelry caskets, hair receiver\'s and trinket boxes. (please view photos for close up on these marks)
Examining the enamel finish we have notice that it is in exceptional condition, with multiple shade of the enamel that is bright, crisp and has no chipping.
The inkwell itself is found by opening the decorative top, inside it is clear and smooth metal. The hinge is strong, not repaired, and sits in perfect balance on the inkwell. At one time there would have had a porcelain or glass insert so it has been well preserved with no ink staining inside.
This rare elegant Art Nouveau shape of thisChamplevé Inkwell has multi-coloured flowers, leaves and scrolling decorative effects in yellow, turquoise, Prussian blue, Dutch blue, pink, a rich ruby red, and white. Please be sure to view photos for any other details.

Dimensions are - 3\" high x 5\" long x 3 1/2\" wide (approx.).
This stands well balanced and proportioned. It is a nice weight, perfectly aligned.
