RARE EARLY COLONIAL PRE-REVOLUTIONARY POWDER HORN. It is very rare to find an authentic powder horn from this early period. There are two or three known from this period and one or two dating slightly earlier. The powder horn measures 14.5 inches along the curve and 2.75 inches across the plug. The horn is inscribed with the carving of base of the horn is carved with three rows of chevrons as well as three rows of chevrons midways of the horn. This horn came from a family whose father had owned the horn for 75 years and knew the family history behind the horn and was told that family geneology had been done to verify the family member and stated Westpoint was at that time part of Virginia. A quick Google searchhas not produced William Nichals war records. Theplug of the horn retains old red paint and the knob for cord attachment appears to be an 18th century brassfurniture pull. The plug has had two missingpins inserted to stabilize the plug from spinning. The horn has a nice mellow yellow and cream color and the spout conforms to other known horns of this period.

The other mentioned early horns are all illustrated in the horn books. We have shown two of the early horns illustrated inTom Grindslade\'s bookon powder horns to show the typical style and type of horn that would be encountered in the early periord prior to the French & Indian War period horns. One horn, \"The John Ball Horn\" is dated 1711 with a later date of 1730. The other horn is the \"Saint George Fort Horn\" which is dated 1724. This horn is guaranteed to be authentic as represented.
