ORIGINAL part-printed lawsuit complaint summons which reads in part as follows: “George the Third, by the Grace of God of Great Britain, France, and Ireland, King, Defender of the Faith, &c. to the sheriff of Bedford county (Virginia though not named) …We command you, that you summon John South.” etc. to answer for a debt claimed by William Candler. Document dated June “in the iii rd Year of our Reign.” (1760 + iii = 1763), signed by Benjamin Howard. Size 7.5 in. by 9 in. on laid, watermarked, rag-content paper; age toned, nicks at ends of folds - some deep, tiny holes and some separation along folds, deep edge nicks at ends of folds, tissue tape repairs on reverse, else fair to good condition. Included is the bill from William Candler for which he is being sued. \" Colonel William Candler, a Revolutionary War hero who was in the battle at Kings Mountain. In 1761, he married Elizabeth Anthony, and they had 11 children. He had been appointed a County Surveyor before the war, which was considered a major political appointment.
