For sale is a Civil War ear letter from W(?). H(?). Taylor addressed to his brother and sisters. This is a significant and important letter because it depicits the deterioration of the Confederate Army (Trans-Mississippi Dept.) near the end of the war. Taylor writes \"This spring Chisum\'s Regt was dismounted yesterday and attached to our Brigade, the boys seem to take it very hard 52 deserted last night, but will be followed and brought back.\" He goes on to write \"...8 more Regt dismounting which willcausedissatisfaction...\" He continues with a personal note \"...and if so I do not ever expect to see any of you again. You will do the best you can . . . until you hear of my death then make such arrangements as my wife desires. Her devotedness to me as a wife has been such that I desire she have the intire controll of all I have.\" The Trans-Mississippi Dept. surrendered on May 26, 1865 as Union troops marched into Shreveport, weeks after Lee surrendered at Appomattox on April 9, 1865. The handwritten letter is on thin paper measuring 10 1/2\" x 8 1/2\". The margins of the paper have minor folds and tears and is creased into six parts by 3 folds. As illustreated in one of thephotos, there are small holes and pin holds mainly along the creases. One of the edge tears is \"fixed with a small piece of Scotchtape. Stainning occurs in portions of the letter but the stains do no affect readability. All-in-all the letter is very readable with beautiful script. The letter is (and should remain) in a plastic clear envelop.
