Bertha Evelyn Jaques (née Clausen) was an early driving force in the field of American etching. Largely self-taught, she combined her interest In nature and the Environment with her desire to explore the etching process she happened upon at the 1893 Columbian Exposition World’s Fair in Chicago. In addition to her interest in etching, Jaques also extensively explored the art of the photogram through the cyanotype process producing strikingly modernist silhouettes of her subjects from nature. In Mike Ware’s book, Cyanotype: The History, Science and Art of Photographic Printing in Prussian Blue, cites “Jacques…of Iowa, who used the process around 1905 to record images of numerous plant species, some of them endangered…..The light transmitted through her diaphanes confers a delicacy of gradation on the photogram which gives it the illusory appearance of a photographic image of a three-dimensional original.”
