DABBAH ISRAEL JUDAICA JEWISH STERLING BESAMIM SPICE BOX VIOLIN JEWELS 96 grams:
$275.00

Anabsolutely wonderful figural sterling silver Judaica spice boxmodeled as a violin, handmade in the Studios of Dabbah Judaica inJerusalem.

Thisworld renowned studio, headed by master artisan Benny Dabbah, specializes in the creation of unique Jewish ceremonial articles insterling silver, which are so outstanding that they are consideredworks of art in addition to being ritual objects.

TheHebrew word for aromatic spices is “Besamim,” and these are usedin the Havdalah ceremony at the conclusion of the weekly Sabbath andHolidays.

Havdalah(Hebrew, meaning \"separation\") is a Jewish religiousceremony that marks the symbolic end of Sabbath and Jewish holidays, and ushers in the new week. It symbolizes the “havdalah,” orseparation between the Holy Days and the rest of the week.

Thequality of workmanship on this spice box is absolutely incredible, and it is extremely labor intensive, as the item is totally handcrafted. The cutting design on the front of the violin is deftly andexpertly done, and there is an intricate scrolled applique surmountedon the body of the violin that is truly stunning. The appliqueincorporates the Hebrew letters for “Besamim,” and is furtherenhanced by 5 jeweled cabochons, 3 of lapis lazuli and 2 of reddishgemstones which could be carnelians. Six silver strings are woundover the miniature fingerboard and pegs of the violin. The scroll ismodeled as a roaring lion, so detailed that you can see hisindividual snarling teeth! The side at the jack opens up so you canplace your favorite Havdalah spices inside.

Thespice box stands up on its own when laid on its side, but if youprefer to have it exhibited vertically, any clear acrylic support easel would easily do the trick (see images). Alternatively, there is a slot in the backthat will allow it to accept a display stand. This piece does NOTcome with either an acrylic easel or a display stand.

Thepiece is stamped “DABBAH Jerusalem Israel” and is hallmarked“925.”

It\'sa hefty, solid piece of sterling weighing 3.4 avoirdupois (not troy)ounces, or the equivalent @ 28.35 grams of approximately 96 grams. It would be over 105 grams @ 31.10 grams per troy ounce.

LENGTH: 6¼”

WIDTH: 2.0” at its widest

HEIGHT: ½”

WEIGHT: 96grams avoirdupois

Thepiece is in very nice condition considering that it\'s vintage and hasbeen used.

Thereis a small shallow indent on one side which could be considered adent, but could also be a tool mark from when thepiece was made (look at images 1 - 2 to clearly see the condition).

Italso has some mild surface scratches that all silver picks up withuse, as well as some tarnish which can easily be shined up if that\'sthe new owner\'s preference. I personally prefer the mellowpatination that tarnish adds to a piece of vintage silver.

Thisis a vintage piece, but the same style, with very smallmodifications, is still being produced by the studio, and iscurrently selling on their website for $500 (model DBSP006, “HAVE AGOOD WEEK Spice Box, and it\'s their second most expensive box. Thedescription on the website offers this lovely sentiment: “Send offthe Sabbath with a sterling silver guitar serenade.”

Thespice box is a sublime creation hand made by the Studio. It\'s adelight to look at and a pleasure to own, or it would make anunforgettable wedding gift to the Jewish couple just starting to setup their new home.

Ineither case, it will become a family heirloom to be cherished forgenerations to come.
