John Trumbull\'s Declaration of Independence is the 12- by 18-foot painting in the U.S. Capitol Rotunda which depicts the presentation of the draft of the Declaration to the Second Continental Congress at Independence Hall in Philadelphia. The painting shows the presentation of the draft of the Declaration by the five members of the drafting committee consisted of Thomas Jefferson (the primary author), Benjamin Franklin, John Adams, Robert R. Livingston and Roger Sherman. The oil-on-canvas work was commissioned in 1817; purchased 1819; and placed in 1826 in the Rotunda. Trumbull\'s work shows 42 of the 56 signers of the Declaration.DATE PUBLISHED: 1856
