DOULTON BURSLEM POTTERY VASES-Circa 1895-John Slater-Chine Ware:
$700.00

Thispair of pottery vaseswere made by the Doulton company, most likely at their Lambeth, England factory. They are Chine Ware which refers to the textured background. It was often on stoneware bodies. Various decorations were then applied with subsequent firings to fix the enamels. It was patented by John Slater while he was working as head of the art department at the Burslem factory. These art wares were expensive to produce and were relatively expensive when sold originally. Because of the handwork, it is very seldom that identical examples are found even a second time.

On the base, the WHS and 1799 markings will be the design code and the artist\'s or assistant to the artist\'s mark. The large impressed # 2968 will be the vase body shape code. The clematis or anemone decoration and the chrysanthemum flowers and foliage is hand-done. The texture is done by impressing a textile into the wet clay before the first firing.

The mark of Doulton & Slater\'s Patent was used on Chine Ware from 1885 to 1939. These particular vases will safely date to within 10 years of 1895.

These vases are high quality and the condition is excellent. They have spent decades in a smoke-free home, protected in adining roomset.

They each measure aprox. 7.75\" H x 3.5\" W and have been professionally appraised at $750+.
