TheDisneyland Monorail System (originally, the Disneyland ALWEG Monorail) openedon June 14, 1959, as a sightseeing attraction in Tomorrow land in Disneyland.The initial track was a winding 0.8-mile loop and became the first dailyoperating monorail in the western hemisphere. The Monorail also became thefirst to cross a public street in 1961 when the beam way was extended to atotal length of 2.5 miles and a station was built at the Disneyland Hotel. Witha second stop, the Monorail had transformed from a ride to a full-fledgedtransportation system.
The WaltDisney World monorail system has been in continuous operation since 1971 withdouble beam track that circles the Seven Seas Lagoon in front of the MagicKingdom. Originally, the monorail system connected the Contemporary andPolynesian hotels with the Magic Kingdom and Transportation and Ticket Center.In later years, the Grand Floridian was added to the loop. Disney expanded themonorail system in 1982 by adding a four-mile extension that travels from theMagic Kingdom resort area to Epcot\'s entrance.
