A very interesting and unusual document. This is an indenture from 1788, signed by Richard Beresford and witnessed by Col. William Washington,both active in the Revolutionary War. Beresford served in the 1stSouth Carolina Regiment and was captured in the fall of Charleston in 1780.Later, he became a member of the S. Carolina house of representatives and a memberof the Continental Congress. William Washington was a second cousin to GeorgeWashington and a notable Revolutionary War commander who led troops in numerous key battles and received a special Congressional silver medal for his valor at the battle of Cowpens. He was laterpromoted to Brig. General by George Washington.When unfolded it is very large -- approx. 24 x 24 inches.
