E. John Robinson lived along the Mendocino, California coastline for over 40 years and became famous for rendering its beauty and dramatic power of the waves in all weather conditions.

I am selling this pristine original for a friend who, 30 years ago, inherited it from a close friend who was the original purchaser.
The following is her personal narrative about the painting:

I am the current owner of this portrait of the sea off the coast near Fort Bragg California. It is not the usual sunlight on the breaking waves of most seascapes. This is a brooding sky with waves pounding the rocks. For those familiar with the charged air, rushing wind, and crashing surf of a coastal storm, this painting will recall memories of the experience. The colors and mood changes as the light in the room warms, intensifies, and subsides. It is many scenes in the same frame. I have lived with it for 30 years and have known it for about 13 years before its original owner and my friend passed it on to me when she moved to a smaller apartment on Church Street in San Francisco. There was no wall to do it justice. It came with me to a south facing wall 100 miles north of its origin within sound of the Pacific’s waves. Now, in the same circumstance, it needs a new wall in a room with natural light to remind the watcher of nature’s power and beauty.

Alice first saw this painting in Carmel on the way to the Monterey Jazz Festival. She was reluctant to spend so much money on a painting. I reminded her of her own advice regarding art. “If your rent is paid and there is food in your cupboard, buy the art you love. If you wait it may be lost forever.” So the “Storm” became hers. Later she would go to Fort Bragg to attend a book signing and meet the author and painter of the Storm, E John Robinson. I have this book, Marine Painting In Oil, inscribed “Thank you Alice, E John Robinson”. The Ruth Carlson Gallery where this signing took place no longer exists but the memories of the artist and the man are very much present in the communities of Fort Bragg and Mendocino. I was there last week and talked with people who knew him well. I wandered the Mendocino Botanical Gardens which he helped design and maintain. When I emerged from the wooded trails to the coast I recognized the “studio” of his paintings. The coast line stretching north was the source of many of his works. It was brilliant on this sunny fall day but it was easy to imagine the scene with the storms from the southwest driving the waves into and over the offshore rocks. This ever changing landscape was hishome and inspiration. Like a fine portraitist he captured the realismand the mood of his subject.
