Palace Hotel, Buckingham Gate, January 25, 1862. To "Dear Madam" In full: "I infer from your letter that your son is already in a good position in India, but I shall bear yr. statement in mind if I have an opportunity of serving him./ I am/ dear Madam/ faithfully yours". James Bruce (1811-1863), 8th Earl of Elgin and 12th Earl of Kincardine, was a British diplomat. Heavily involved in colonial administration, he held many important official positions. The Earl served as the Governor General of the Province of Canada, High Commissioner in charge of opening trades with China and Japan, and as Viceroy of India. He is remembered for overseeing the Second Opium War and ordering in 1860 the destruction of the Old Summer Palace in Beijing. Toned. Irregularly cut. Tape used to attach letter to paper has left stains. Paper to which letter is attached contains typed captions, ink notes, and a 1x1¼ black and white photo. Otherwise, fine condition.
