EARLY 19TH CENTURY FLORAL SAMPLER BY MARY ROGERS - 1812:

Early 19th century linen and silk work sampler by Mary Rogers 1812. This sampler is just stunning with fine stitch work throughout. The centre of the linen is stitched in black with the following verseTeach me to feel another\'s woe, to hide the fault I seeThat mercy I to others show, that mercy show to meMary Rogers 1812Above the verse is an exquisite floral swag whilst below it is an equally exquisite floral spray and the whole thing is surrounded by a leaf border.The linen has overall discolouration consistent with its age, slightly darker in areas and the colours of the silks are good with the odd stitch missing in the border. The last photo is of the reverse of the sampler and shows how the colours would have looked when Mary first stitched it. As can also be seen from the photographs, there are some small areas of damage to the field of the linen and some larger ones around the edges. I\'ve photographed the sampler on a white background to highlight this but once on a similar coloured backing the damage would be a lot less noticeable. Also, the first photo gives some idea of how the sampler would look when it was matted and framed. As can be seen, virtually all the damage around the edges would be obscured by the matting.
