EARLY 19TH CENTURY SAMPLER BY MARGARET DIXON AGED 10 - 1843:

Early 19th century linen and wool work sampler by Margaret Dixon aged ten - 1843. This sampler is completely charming with neat stitch work throughout. The top section of the linen is stitched with rows of alphabet letters, numbers and border patterns, the last row having the initials \"M\" and \"DI\" on each side. Beneath the letters is the following short verse stitched in black silk and underlined with a floral border
Great God with wonder and with praise On all thy works I lookBut still thy wisdom pow\'r and grace shine brightest in thy book
The bottom section of the linen has Margaret\'s name, age and the date of 1843 in the centre, also worked in black silk, with a diamond and floral motif on each side and the whole thing is surrounded by a wonderful deep strawberry borderThe linen has overall discolouration consistent with its age with some areas of faint staining as can be seen on the photographs. The colours of the wool are good. The last photo is of the reverse of the sampler and shows how the colours would have looked when Margaret first stitched it. As can also be seen on the tenth photograph, there is a small tear approximately one inch long to the linen in the second row of alphabet letters. I\'ve photographed the sampler on a white background to highlight this but once on a similar coloured backing and behind glass this would hardly be noticeable. Measures 12 3/4 \" x 16 1/2 \"
