The FLOWER GIRL of HOLLAND, created by Edna Hibel, potrays a young girl holding a tulip and surrounded by the many other spring flowers for which Holland and the Netherlands are so justly famous. This Limited Edition plate was Hand Painted in Holland by ROYAL GOEDEWAAGEN on a Fine Delft Ceramic plate in traditional DELFT BLUE. Issued in 1995 in an extremely Limited Edition of just 300 plates – a VERY small number for any collector plate, especially a plate by an artist as collectable as Edna Hibel. Diameter just over 6 1/4 inches (16 cm). This is a RARE OPPORTUNITY for you to obtain this scarce and desirable plate. EXCELLENT CONDITION -- no chips, cracks, crazing, repairs or other damage. This is old dealer stock, never previously displayed or sold at retail. Complete with original box and Certificate. According to the Certificate: “The special glaze guarantees craze-free Delft so that it will endure to be appreciated and enjoyed by future generations.” The plate also states that it is \"Not for Food Use.\"Edna Hibel is one of the most respected artists of our time. She studied at the prestigious Boston Museum of Fine Art, and, at age 22, became the youngest artist ever to exhibit in a major American museum. She has had major exhibitions all over the world, and has received commissions that include a painting for the National Archives in Washington and a painting commemorating the 200th anniversary of the White House. In 2001, she received the Leonardo da Vinci award, one of the most prestigious in the world of art, presented to an outstanding world artist just once every three years. The winner is selected by a jury of 100 distinguished art critics from five continents, members of the World Cultural Council. Ms. Hibel was chosen in part for the outstanding quality of her art, and in part for her innovations in artistic methods (especially in original stone lithography and porcelain) and her contribution to art education. In addition to numerous artistic awards, Ms. Hibel has received many humanitarian awards, and is affectionately referred to as the \"heart and conscience of America\". Close examination of several of these plates led me to conclude that the DARK BLUE elements (including the HIBEL signature) were transfer-printed onto the plates, and the \"hand-painted\" parts of the plate are painted in medium and light blue. On English china, this would be known as \"print and tint\", where the outlines and details are printed onto the plate, and then broad areas are filled will color. China manufacturers use the term \"hand painted\" for china where ANY part of the finished design is painted by hand, even when MOST of the design is done by machine. All of the PRIMARY features are the same from plate to plate, but the subtlety of coloration and shadow is added by the individual painter. With the background flowers on either side of the girl\'s face, I see subtle variations in the flowers themselves (mostly medium and light blue, hand painted) but no readily discernible variation in the leaves and stems (dark blue, presumably printed). On the girl\'s face, the eyes and mouth are dark blue, with no readily discernible variation from plate to plate, whereas there is some variation in the way the shadow of her hair falls across her forehead and the left side of her face (medium blue, hand painted). The plate and the certificate clearly state that the plate is \"Hand Painted\", and it is Hand Painted -- according to the standard usage of that phrase by china manufacturers. But that does NOT mean that someone started with a completely blank plate and hand painted the ENTIRE design. Since I have several of these plates and this is a multiple listing, I have NOT taken a photo of EACH plate. The one you receive will have a different plate number than shown in the photo (bottom of this listing), and there will be subtle variations in the plates themselves. That is the very NATURE of hand-painted china, and the process was approved by Edna Hibel as a way of presenting her art with a personalized and more individual touch.
