Presenting a handwritten hand sized Coptic Ethiopian Bible/Psalm/Prayer Book w/ great aging throughout, w/ 4 gorgeous hand painted icons! Written in the Ethiopic (Ge'ez) script, a Semitic language that is no longer spoken, but is still used for liturgical and other religious purposes by the Ethiopian Orthodox Church. The subject of these "Bibles" are generally always Christian, but actual content varies. Dating Ethiopian manuscripts is very difficult as scribes copied old monastic manuscripts using the same materials as had been used for centuries, and have been as old as the 14th century; this carries many examples of an mildly aged copy, with original vellum animal skin pages stained and aged, as shown with text and 4 color icons, bound in leather wrapped wooden boards, themselves stitched together by sinew many many years ago. The Bible presents itself in a smaller format, measuring around 3" x 2.5" x 1.5" thick, portable and pocket sized. The highlights are the gorgeous hand painted icons, depicting various religious scenes and figures, as shown. The leather also carries a unique hand stamped design. We could loosely guess the book originated sometime late c1700s-early 1900s, with wear to the vellum as an indicator, as well as the condition to the text- a sure indicator of at least a minimum of 100 years of use. A majority of the text are incantations to protect the owner from supernatural forces, combined with what looks to be possibly the Book of Psalms, liturgical prayers, or the Bible. Written in red/black, as shown, the red indicating sacred words spoken by the Savior, intermixed with the aforementioned icons. There is some definitive age to the interior of this example, which is normal for these rare gems; this one estimated around 1700-1900. There are roughly 29 leaves/58 pages in this, as shown, with 4 hand painted color icons. Obtained in an online sale direct from Ethiopia.
