Dating from the mid 1800s this Aubusson hand-painted pattern cartoon is a rare and exquisite find.
It has been so many years since I have come home with any!!
Hand-painted by artists these patterns were produced as patterns for the hand weavers that produced Aubusson tapestries. Many were painted by famous artists and the quality of the painting was always amazing.
The patterns were always folded and sometimes cut into sections for use by the many weavers.
This large cartoon is a unique piece and would make the most amazing interiors piece.It could be framed or simply hung as it comes in any period interior.
This cartoon is gouache on parchment backed with linen. The colours are beautifully muted in typical Aubusson shades on a soft eau de nil green background.
The design carries a scrolled and curled border with a beautiful flower bouquet surrounded by a flower vine. It would possibly have been the design for a chair seat or chair back.
I love the history and evidence of its use with the tiny pin holes, folds and sections that are all now soundly in place on the backing.
