Exquisite,hand carvedwooden statue depicting the seated Amida Buddha, the central deity of Japan’s popular Pure Land (Jōdo 浄土) sects and the ruler of the Western Paradise of Ultimate Bliss. Exceptional qualitypiece with sublime, finely detailed carving. Spectacular attention to the intricacies ofthe iconography with a serene meditative expression of deep concentration, magnificent folds in the robes, and beautiful lotus base.The hands rest in the lap in the meditating gesture of samāhitā mudra. The Buddha\'s hair has been carefully hand carved with scores of tiny curls upon his head. Additionally, the statue is surmounted by a sublime carved mandorla rising behind the figure. Thisexquisite statueis of significant size, and measures approximately 13\" high.In excellentvintage condition with just minor wear commensurate with age.We note that the top of the mandorla has a small chip and one of his thumbs has been glued. Neither detracts from the overall splendor of the statue, which is stunning from any angle, including the reverse. A true masterwork. Inscribed on the underside with a lengthy ink inscription.A rare treasure, would make a superbcenterpiece for the connoisseur of world class Asian art and antiques.
