This is an exquisite and rare piece of 18th century French crewelwork c1750. It was most likely part of an altar cloth or banner or something similar, it has been worken in wool on a cotton and linen base fabric which is a little rubbed and worn on the front, its woven texture can be seen bettter on the reverse.
The central motif is earlier than the rest of the crewelwork, and is very delicate with silk highlights, it depicts a religeous character. This has been applied to the cloth and then the rest of the crewelwork design has been worked around this central motif.
It measures about 41.5" by 26" or 1.06 meters by 66 cms and weighs about 500g. The condition is very good overall, just minor wear, see photos, a wonderful piece to frame or for a collection.Thank you for looking.
