Description:

An extremely rare DOUBLE FOOTED Decorated Wrought Iron American Roasting Skewer or Spit, New England, Circa 1740-1760.

Great condition, untouched, uncleaned, great old surface and patina. Rare form, a wonderful tightly tooled and twist decorated handle with a wonderful curled pig tail hanger.

A rare survivor, most of these footed skewers either lost one or more of their feet or just burned out. With two sets of feet you could adjust the spit four different ways. With the addition of the added feet, you did not have to use fire dogs or spit holders to roast the meat.

There are similar examples in the major museums as well as in numerous publications such as \"Colonial Wrought Iron the Sorber Collection\"; Early American Antique Country Furnishings\" by George Neumann, and \"Furniture Treasury\", by Wallace Nutting.

Approximately 24 3/4\" long and 4 1/2\" tall.
